The Standard That Applies When A182's Flange-and-Fitting Scope Doesn't Fit the Part
ASTM A473 fills the role of general-purpose stainless steel forging specification within a family of ASTM standards where several other members — A182 most prominently — cover narrower, application-specific product categories using overlapping grade chemistries. This overlap is a frequent source of specification confusion: a purchase order calling out '316 stainless forging to ASTM standard' without the specific standard number leaves genuine ambiguity, because Type 316 chemistry and mechanical property requirements appear in both A182 (for flanges, fittings, and valves) and A473 (for general forged shapes), and the two standards carry different dimensional frameworks, class organization, and product scope even where the underlying material chemistry is essentially the same.
The practical distinction comes down to what the forging actually is. A182's scope is explicitly pressure-piping and pressure-vessel components — flanges, forged fittings, valve bodies — and its dimensional requirements are written to coordinate directly with ASME B16.5 and B16.47 piping dimensional standards. A473 has no such product-form restriction: it covers stainless forgings as bars, blooms, billets, and forged shapes of essentially any configuration, intended for any application where stainless steel's corrosion resistance or heat resistance is the reason for specifying it. A custom forged bracket, a machined shaft blank, a gear forging, or a structural component in stainless steel chemistry falls naturally under A473's scope, not A182's, even when the specific grade — 316, 410, or otherwise — is identical to what a flange forging in the same chemistry would use.
A473 organizes its coverage by class, corresponding to the heat treatment condition the forging is supplied in, which matters because stainless grades achieve their design properties through different mechanisms. Austenitic grades like 304 and 316 are typically supplied in the annealed condition, where solution annealing maximizes corrosion resistance and ductility. Martensitic grades like 410 and 420 are typically supplied hardened and tempered, developing higher strength and hardness at some cost to corrosion resistance relative to the austenitic grades. Correctly identifying which class an application requires — driven by whether corrosion resistance or mechanical strength is the primary design driver — is as much a part of specifying A473 correctly as selecting the right base grade chemistry.
