Grades & Standards for Front Axle Components
EN24T (817M40) – Standard Commercial Vehicle
The most common front axle stub axle grade in India. UTS 850–1000 MPa in T condition. Good hardenability ensures through-section properties in sections up to 150 mm diameter. Available as per IS 4432.
EN25T (826M40) – High-Tensile Bus / Heavy Truck
Nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel for higher-load applications — intercity buses and heavy trucks. UTS 1000–1150 MPa. Tighter impact requirement in Charpy test at -20°C for cold-climate service.
42CrMo4 (1.7225) – European OEM Spec
European equivalent used when Tier 1 drawing specifies EN 10083-3 grade. UTS 1000–1200 MPa QT. We cross-reference with IS 4432 grade and confirm equivalence on MTC. Common for export assemblies.
IS 4432 Grade 817M40 – Indian Standards
Indian standard covering EN24 chemical composition. Specified by Tata, Ashok Leyland, and Mahindra for replacement market components. Mill certificate and hardness test report supplied with every batch.
AS 1444 Grade 4340 – Australia Export Spec
SAE 4340 / AS 4340 for Australian OEM and replacement market exports. Higher Ni content gives superior toughness. Mechanical properties verified by third-party testing laboratory on request.
Surface: Shot Blast + Primer / Zinc Plate as Required
All front axle forgings shot-blasted to Sa 2.5. Rust-inhibiting primer or zinc electroplating applied per customer specification. Zinc plating thickness 8–12 µm standard, 25 µm available for aggressive environments.
The front axle assembly of a truck or bus consists of multiple forged components working together under combined steering and braking loads. The full I-beam is a large open-die forging, but the sub-components — stub axle halves, king pin housings, steering knuckle bodies, tie rod arms, and yokes — are precision closed-die forgings in the 0.5–10 kg range. These are the components Shivam Forge manufactures from Rajkot, supplying Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to Indian OEMs as well as the replacement market across India, UAE, and Southeast Asia.
Grade selection for front axle components is driven by vehicle category and load. EN24T (817M40) covers most medium commercial vehicle and LCV stub axle applications, delivering UTS of 850–1000 MPa in the T (quenched and tempered) condition. Heavier intercity buses and multi-axle trucks specify EN25T (826M40) for the additional tensile and impact performance. European OEM drawings call up 42CrMo4 (1.7225 per EN 10083-3) — we supply this with full EN material certification and cross-reference to IS 4432 equivalents where helpful for Indian approval authorities.
Our NDT regime on front axle components is non-negotiable. Every part receives 100% wet magnetic particle inspection per ASTM E709 covering the entire forged surface, plus 100% ultrasonic scan per ASTM E114 to confirm freedom from internal shrinkage, laminations, or inclusion stringers. We calibrate both test sets against reference standard blocks. Reject criteria match drawing callouts — any indication exceeding the accept threshold results in component isolation and lot review. Inspection records are retained for five years.
For OEM supply programs, we support full PPAP Level 3 documentation including CMM-based dimensional reports for all drawing characteristics, initial process capability studies targeting Cpk ≥1.33 on critical dimensions, PFMEA, control plan, and material test certificates with chemical and mechanical results. Our tooling team develops forging dies from customer drawings using CAD/CAM — we can review the forging feasibility of a new stub axle or knuckle design and advise on draft angles and parting line location before tooling is cut.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a front axle beam manufacturer?
No — full front axle I-beams are very large open-die forgings (40–80 kg) outside our current capacity. We manufacture the precision forged components that go into the front axle assembly: stub axles, king pin housings, steering knuckles, yokes, tie rod arms, and spindle assemblies in the 0.5–10 kg range.
Which steel grade is used for front axle stub axles in India?
EN24T (IS 4432 Grade 817M40) is the most widely specified grade for stub axles and king pin housings in Indian commercial vehicles. EN25T (826M40) is used where higher tensile strength is required. European OEM drawings often specify 42CrMo4 (1.7225), which we supply with full EN 10083 certification.
What is the king pin bore tolerance you can achieve?
We CNC bore king pin housings to H7 tolerance — on a typical 30 mm bore this is +0.000/+0.021 mm. Bore straightness and cylindricity are verified on CMM and the result is included in the dimensional inspection report. Tighter tolerances available on request.
What NDT is performed on front axle forgings?
All safety-critical front axle components receive 100% wet magnetic particle inspection (ASTM E709) for surface and near-surface defects, and 100% ultrasonic testing (ASTM E114 / IS 7666) for internal flaws. Inspection records are retained for 5 years and copies provided on request.
Do you supply to commercial vehicle OEM suppliers?
Yes. We supply Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JCBL. We can work on PPAP Level 1 to Level 3 submissions including first article inspection reports, capability studies, and control plans.
What is PPAP Level 3 and can you provide it for front axle components?
PPAP Level 3 requires submission of: dimensional results (CMM report), material test certificate, process flow diagram, PFMEA, control plan, MSA, initial process capability (Cpk ≥1.33), and appearance approval. Yes, we provide full PPAP Level 3 packages for OEM supply programs.
