Fertilizer Plants — The World's Most Technically Demanding High-Pressure, High-Corrosion Forging Service
The global fertilizer industry sits at the heart of humanity's food security challenge — and it is also one of the world's most chemically extreme forging service environments. The Haber-Bosch process (Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, BASF Germany, 1909–1913 — the most important industrial invention of the 20th century, responsible for feeding 50% of the world's population through synthetic nitrogen fertilizer) transforms atmospheric nitrogen (N2 — 78% of air, chemically inert) and hydrogen (H2 — from steam methane reforming of natural gas) into ammonia (NH3) at 400–500°C and 150–300 bar over an iron catalyst. Urea synthesis — the conversion of ammonia and CO2 into urea ((NH2)2CO) at 140–150 bar and 180–200°C — creates a dramatically more corrosive chemical environment than ammonia synthesis. The villain: ammonium carbamate (NH4OCONH2), the intermediate product formed in the early stages of urea synthesis, which is extremely aggressive toward all but the most corrosion-resistant stainless steels. Ordinary AISI 316L (the universal corrosion-resistant stainless) suffers 3–5 mm/year corrosion rate in urea carbamate service — an unacceptably high rate for pressure vessel equipment. The solution: 316L UG (Urea Grade — a special qualification variant of 316L stainless steel where the passive film on the metal's surface has maximum 0.02% Fe content, verified by ESCA — Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis, or by a standard corrosion immersion test in 65% HNO3 at boiling point).
