Stronger Than Stamped: Forged Rocker Arms

A rocker arm operates at high cycle rates under alternating contact stress at the cam lobe pad and valve tip. Stamped sheet metal rocker arms are adequate for low-load petrol engines, but diesel engines, high-performance engines and commercial vehicle powerplants demand the fatigue strength, rigidity and wear resistance that only a solid forged rocker arm can deliver. Shivam Forge has supplied forged rocker arm blanks to engine manufacturers across India for over 20 years.

Rocker Arm Types We Forge

Passenger Car OHV Rocker Arms

Forged rocker arm blanks for overhead-valve (OHV / pushrod) petrol and diesel engines. EN9 grade, pivot bore machined to H7, valve pad and pushrod socket semi-finished. Weight range 0.3–1.2 kg.

Commercial Vehicle & Truck Rocker Arms

Heavy-section forged rocker arms for commercial vehicle diesel engines in EN36 or case-hardening steel. Higher cross-section rigidity than passenger car variants to handle elevated valve train loads at rated engine speeds.

Tractor & Agricultural Engine Rocker Arms

Forged tractor engine rocker arms in EN9 and EN36 for single and multi-cylinder agricultural diesel engines. Configured for adjusting screw-and-locknut or hydraulic lash adjuster depending on engine design.

OHC Engine Finger Followers

Forged finger follower rocker arms for overhead camshaft (OHC) engines. Thin-section forging with hardened cam contact surface, HLA (hydraulic lash adjuster) socket and valve tip pad.

High-Performance & Racing Rocker Arms

Forged rocker arms in EN36 and SAE 4340 for performance and competition engines. Higher ratio configurations (1.6:1 to 1.8:1) with lightweight material removal after forging for optimum valve train dynamics.

Custom Engine Rocker Arm Blanks

Any rocker arm configuration produced from customer drawing or sample. We develop forging dies and manufacture pilot samples within three to five weeks from drawing approval.

Rocker Arm Forging Capabilities

Closed-Die Hot Forging

All rocker arm blanks are produced by precision closed-die hot forging, producing a fully dense, high-strength component with continuous grain flow through the critical boss and arm sections.

Case Hardening & Carburising

Rocker arms in EN36 and case-hardening steel are gas carburised to 0.8–1.2 mm case depth followed by quenching to achieve 58–62 HRC surface hardness with a tough core.

Induction Hardening of Contact Pads

For through-hardened EN9 rocker arms, valve pad and cam contact surfaces are selectively induction hardened to 55–60 HRC, providing wear resistance only where contact stress is highest.

Pivot Bore Honing

Rocker arm pivot bore is reamed and honed to H7 tolerance with Ra 0.8 μm finish, ensuring correct running clearance on the rocker shaft or HLA socket for oil film formation.

Shot Peening

Selected rocker arm forgings are shot peened on the arm body to introduce compressive residual stress, extending fatigue life under the bending and torsion experienced during high-speed valve train operation.

100% Hardness & Dimension Inspection

Every rocker arm lot is 100% Rockwell hardness tested at the contact pad. Pivot bore, arm length and pad geometry are dimensionally inspected per the approved control plan.

Forged vs Stamped Rocker Arms

3× Higher Fatigue Life

The solid cross-section and continuous grain flow of a forged rocker arm delivers approximately three times the bending fatigue life of a stamped and folded sheet metal equivalent under identical valve spring load and engine speed.

Stiffer Under Load

Forged rocker arms deflect significantly less under peak valve spring load, maintaining valve timing accuracy at high engine speeds — critical for performance diesel and petrol engines with tight timing requirements.

Better Wear at Contact Surfaces

The carburised or induction-hardened contact pad on a forged rocker arm provides superior wear resistance at the cam lobe interface, reducing lobe and pad wear rates significantly versus case-hardened stamped alternatives.

OEM Standard for Commercial Vehicles

Every major commercial vehicle diesel engine OEM globally specifies solid forged rocker arms — not stamped — for the combination of rigidity, fatigue life and wear resistance required in high-BMEP heavy diesel applications.

Dimensional Consistency for Assembly

Closed-die forging produces rocker arm blanks with consistent mass and dimensional distribution, simplifying CNC machining fixture design and reducing per-piece machining time versus variable-geometry stamped parts.

Repairable & Rebuildable

Forged rocker arms can be reground and re-hardened during engine overhaul, unlike stamped rocker arms which must be replaced. This reduces total lifecycle cost for commercial vehicle and agricultural engine operators.

Shivam Forge is a precision rocker arm forging manufacturer at Shapar GIDC, Rajkot, Gujarat, producing hot-forged rocker arm blanks and semi-finished rocker arms for passenger car, commercial vehicle, tractor and performance engine applications. We forge rocker arms in EN9, EN36 and case-hardening steel grades, with in-house carburising, induction hardening, pivot bore honing and 100% hardness inspection. Our ISO 9001:2015 quality system covers the complete production process, from raw material verification through to finished component dimensional inspection and dispatch.

The fundamental difference between a stamped and a forged rocker arm comes down to cross-sectional area and material density. A stamped rocker arm is made from sheet metal bent into a U or H channel — it has thin walls, air gaps and stress concentration at every bend radius. A forged rocker arm is a solid component with continuous grain flow from the pivot boss through the arm to the contact pad, with no porosity, no voids and no stress concentrations other than those in the design geometry itself. Under the bending loads imposed by valve spring pressures of 500–2000 N during engine operation, this difference in structure translates directly to fatigue life — forged rocker arms last two to four times longer than comparable stamped arms.

Commercial vehicle diesel engine manufacturers have recognised this for decades and universally specify solid forged rocker arms in their production engines. The bending stiffness of a forged arm is also critical for valve timing accuracy at high engine speeds: a flexible rocker arm deflects under valve spring load, effectively retarding or advancing valve timing relative to the design specification and reducing engine breathing efficiency. Our forged rocker arms in EN36 with case-hardened contact pads are engineered to the stiffness and wear resistance requirements of the most demanding commercial diesel engine valve trains.

Our Rajkot facility produces rocker arm forgings across the full weight range from 0.3 kg (passenger car rocker arms) to 5 kg (heavy commercial vehicle rocker arm assemblies). After forging, rocker arm blanks go through heat treatment, CNC semi-machining of the pivot bore and pad geometry, surface hardening (induction or carburising depending on grade), honing and final inspection. We develop forging dies from customer drawings and can produce first-off pilot samples within three to five weeks, making Shivam Forge an efficient development partner for new engine programs in the Rajkot automotive engineering belt.
