A forged crane hook is a safety-critical lifting component — failure means dropped load, structural damage and serious injury risk. The forging process is not optional here: casting produces the porosity and grain discontinuities that crack under cyclic fatigue loading; machining from bar sacrifices the continuous grain flow that gives a hook its tensile ductility at the shank radius and throat. Hot closed-die forging of hook geometry, done properly, aligns grain flow around the curve of the hook, distributes residual compressive stress at the inner radius after normalising, and produces the elongation and reduction-in-area values required by IS 3815 and DIN 15401. Every crane hook and lifting hook produced by Shivam Forge is proof load tested at 2× WLL per IS 3815, DIN 15401 and BS EN 1677. All crane hooks and safety-critical lifting hooks undergo 100% magnetic particle testing (wet fluorescent or dry powder) after heat treatment to detect surface and near-surface cracks, laps or seams. MPT is conducted per IS 3703 / ASTM E709. Hooks with any linear indication are rejected. Test records retained in the quality file for each batch.
Critical hook dimensions — throat opening, shank diameter, eye bore, hook height, overall reach — are inspected against the standard hook drawing per IS 3815 or DIN 15401. IS 3815 requires that each hook shank be marked with gauge length and elongation reference marks so that in-service hook deformation (indicating overload) can be detected during inspection. We apply elongation marks by stamp before dispatch and record the original gauge length on the test certificate. This is a mandatory safety feature on Indian standard crane hooks.
