Why SS 316L is the Specified Grade for Wet & Chemical Environments
SS 316 and SS 316L share the same chromium-nickel austenitic base as SS 304 — but the 2–3% molybdenum addition fundamentally changes the corrosion picture. Chloride-ion pitting resistance, crevice corrosion resistance in brackish water, and resistance to reducing acids all improve significantly. The L-grade limits carbon to ≤0.03%, which prevents carbide precipitation at weld heat-affected zones — critical for pharmaceutical vessels, chemical plant pipework, and offshore structures where sensitisation would otherwise allow intergranular corrosion.
SS 316 / 316L Forging Applications
Chemical Plant Flanges & Nozzles (ASTM A182 F316L)
Weld-neck, slip-on, and blind flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47 in ASTM A182 F316L. Nozzle forgings for pressure vessel shells. Solution annealed condition. Material cert per EN 10204 3.1 with chemical, mechanical, and corrosion test results.
Pharmaceutical Vessel Components & Fittings
Sanitary-grade SS 316L forgings for API reactor vessels, bioreactor nozzles, and product-contact fittings. Ra ≤0.8 µm internal surface finish achievable. 316L specified because L-grade prevents sensitisation during cleaning-in-place (CIP) steam sterilisation cycles.
Marine Hardware & Offshore Fittings
Deck fittings, bollard bodies, hawse pipe flanges, and structural brackets in SS 316L. DNV GL, Lloyd's, and Bureau Veritas material certificates available. NACE MR0175 compliance documented for offshore sour service components.
Pump Bodies & Impeller Blanks
Forged pump body halves, impeller blanks, and seal housings for chemical and pharmaceutical centrifugal pumps. SS 316L for corrosive media; 316 for ambient-temperature non-welded assemblies. Pressure testing of finished pump bodies to 1.5× working pressure.
Food Processing Equipment (3-A Sanitary Standard)
SS 316L forgings for food and dairy equipment — valve bodies, nozzle connections, and hygienic fittings conforming to 3-A Sanitary Standard 68-03. Forgings supplied in solution-annealed and passivated condition. No ferrite contamination in product contact areas.
Oil & Gas Sub-Sea Valve Components
Valve bodies, bonnets, and trim components for sub-sea oil & gas applications. Material ASTM A182 F316L or duplex F51 depending on service. NACE MR0175-ISO 15156 compliance. Hardness limit 22 HRC (200 HB) for sour service components.
Our SS316 / 316L Forging Process
Grade Verification (PMI / Spectrometric Testing)
Every SS 316 / 316L billet receives Positive Material Identification (PMI) using handheld XRF spectrometer on receipt. We verify Mo ≥2.0%, Cr 16–18%, Ni 10–14%, and for L-grade: C ≤0.03%. No forging begins until PMI passes. Results recorded on incoming material log.
Controlled Heating (950–1150°C) in Clean Atmosphere
Stainless steel billets heated to 950–1150°C in a clean gas-fired furnace with neutral to slightly reducing atmosphere. We avoid contact with copper, zinc, or carbon-steel tooling at elevated temperature — contamination causes sigma-phase embrittlement and surface defects in stainless forgings.
Closed-Die Forging – Avoid Contamination
SS 316/316L forged in dedicated stainless tooling or with clean tooling verified before use. Press lubricants are stainless-compatible (colloidal graphite-free on final operations). Forging temperature 950–1100°C. Flash trimming in controlled conditions to prevent edge cracking.
Solution Annealing (1050°C + Water Quench per ASTM A276)
All SS 316 and 316L forgings solution-annealed at 1050–1100°C and water quenched per ASTM A276 / ASTM A182. This dissolves any carbides precipitated during forging and restores full corrosion resistance. Critical for L-grade: solution annealing confirms the material is in the correct metallurgical state.
Passivation (Citric Acid per ASTM A967)
Forgings passivated in citric acid solution per ASTM A967 Method C2 to remove free iron from the surface and restore the passive chromium oxide film. We test passivation quality by copper sulphate test (ASTM A967 Section 12). Pharmaceutical and food-grade parts also receive electro-polishing on request.
CMM + Material Test Cert (Chemical, Mechanical, Pitting Corrosion ASTM G48)
Dimensional inspection by CMM for all critical features. Material test certificate covers chemical composition, tensile and yield strength, elongation, and hardness. ASTM G48 Method A pitting corrosion test available on request for pharmaceutical and sub-sea applications.
SS316 Specifications & Standards
ASTM A182 Grade F316 / F316L (Flanges & Fittings)
ASTM A182 is the governing standard for forged stainless flanges, fittings, and valves for pressure service. F316 has C ≤0.08%; F316L has C ≤0.03%. We forge and certify both grades. MTCs include full chemistry, tensile, hardness, and grain size per ASTM A182 requirements.
ASTM A276 / A479 (Bar & Billet)
ASTM A276 and A479 cover SS 316 bar and billet from which forgings are produced. We procure billet to A479 with Type 316/316L designation and forge to A182 for finished components. Billet certificates retained and referenced on the forging MTC.
EN 10250-4 / BS 970 316S31 (European)
EN 10250-4 covers open-die forgings in austenitic stainless steel. Grade 1.4401 (316) and 1.4404 (316L) per EN 10088-3. BS 970 designation 316S31 and 316S11 for 316L. We issue EN 10204 3.1 certificates referencing these standards for European customers.
DIN 1.4401 (SS316) / 1.4404 (SS316L)
DIN material numbers used by German engineering and chemical plant contractors. 1.4401 is SS 316; 1.4404 is SS 316L. We can certify forgings to these DIN designations per EN 10083 and EN 10250-4. German EPC contractors in India regularly specify these grades.
NACE MR0175 – ISO 15156 for Oil & Gas
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 governs material selection for sour service (H₂S-containing) oil and gas environments. SS 316L in solution-annealed condition typically meets NACE requirements; hardness must be ≤22 HRC. We document NACE compliance on the MTC for downstream qualification.
3-A Sanitary Standard 68-03 (Food / Pharma)
3-A Standard 68-03 covers stainless steel materials for food equipment — requires SS 316L (not 316) for product-contact surfaces. Internal surface finish Ra ≤0.8 µm. Passivated per ASTM A967. We supply forgings with a 3-A compliance statement and supporting material documentation.
SS 316L is the material of choice wherever a component faces corrosive media, chloride environments, or must be welded without risk of intergranular corrosion. The 2–3% molybdenum addition — absent in SS 304 — shifts the pitting resistance equivalent (PRE) from about 18 for 304 to 25–26 for 316L, which makes a decisive difference in seawater, chlorinated process streams, and pharmaceutical cleaning agents. Shivam Forge forges SS 316 and 316L components for chemical plant contractors, pharmaceutical equipment manufacturers, marine fabricators, and oil & gas EPC companies across India and for export to UAE, Singapore, and Europe.
Forging stainless steel correctly requires process discipline that differs from carbon steel operations. Contamination with copper, zinc, or carbon-steel particles at forging temperature causes surface defects and compromises corrosion resistance. At Shivam Forge, SS 316/316L billets are forged in segregated operations using clean tooling and stainless-compatible lubricants. We heat to 950–1150°C in a clean atmosphere furnace. Every billet receives PMI verification on receipt — if the Mo content or C content is outside grade limits, the heat is rejected before forging begins.
Solution annealing is non-negotiable for SS 316L forgings. We anneal at 1050–1100°C and water quench per ASTM A276 and ASTM A182 requirements. This dissolves chromium carbides formed during forging, restores the homogeneous austenitic microstructure, and confirms the material will perform to its rated corrosion resistance in service. After annealing, forgings are passivated in citric acid solution per ASTM A967 Method C2 to restore the passive chromium oxide film and remove any free iron from the surface.
Our SS 316/316L forgings are supplied with EN 10204 Type 3.1 material test certificates covering: chemical composition (full 8-element analysis), tensile and yield strength, elongation, reduction in area, and Brinell hardness. ASTM G48 pitting corrosion test, grain size per ASTM E112, intergranular corrosion test per ASTM A262 Practice E, and third-party witnessed inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's, DNV GL) are available on request and are specified for pharmaceutical, sub-sea, and marine classification projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is SS 316L specified instead of SS 304 for chemical and pharmaceutical applications?
The difference is molybdenum. SS 304 contains no molybdenum; SS 316L contains 2–3% Mo. Molybdenum dramatically increases pitting resistance in chloride environments and resistance to reducing acids. The L-grade (≤0.03% C) also prevents sensitisation — carbide precipitation at weld heat-affected zones — which would allow intergranular corrosion in welded assemblies. For pharmaceutical CIP/SIP cycles, marine environments, and chemical plant handling chlorides or HCl, 316L is the minimum acceptable grade.
What is ASTM A182 F316L and do you forge to this standard?
ASTM A182 Grade F316L specifies forged stainless steel flanges, fittings, and valves for pressure service, with Type 316L chemistry (C ≤0.03%, Mo 2.0–3.0%, Cr 16.0–18.0%, Ni 10.0–14.0%). Yes — we forge to A182 F316L with full compliance documentation including chemical analysis, tensile test, hardness, and heat treatment record. Certificates issued per EN 10204 Type 3.1.
Does SS 316L require solution annealing after forging?
Yes, always. Forging at 950–1100°C can precipitate chromium carbides at grain boundaries if cooling is slow — the 'sensitisation' phenomenon. Solution annealing at 1050–1100°C followed by rapid water quench dissolves these carbides and restores full corrosion resistance. ASTM A182 requires this heat treatment for F316L forgings. We perform it as standard on all SS 316/316L production.
What is sensitisation and how does your process prevent it?
Sensitisation occurs when stainless steel is exposed to temperatures of 450–850°C during welding or slow post-forge cooling. Chromium migrates to grain boundaries to form chromium carbides, leaving chromium-depleted zones that are susceptible to intergranular corrosion. We prevent sensitisation by: (1) using L-grade material (C ≤0.03%) which has lower carbon available to form carbides, and (2) solution annealing all forgings after forming.
Can you perform the ASTM G48 pitting corrosion test?
ASTM G48 Method A (immersion in ferric chloride solution at 22°C for 72 hours) is available through our third-party testing laboratory partner. The test confirms freedom from pitting after the specified exposure period. Required for sub-sea components, pharmaceutical approval, and some marine classification societies. Results included in the material test package.
Do you supply pharmaceutical-grade SS 316L forgings?
Yes. Pharmaceutical vessel nozzles, reactor flanges, and product-contact fittings in SS 316L are a regular product for us. We supply in solution-annealed and passivated condition per ASTM A967, with material test certificates meeting USP, FDA, and EU GMP documentation requirements. Electropolishing to Ra ≤0.4 µm available through our sub-contractor.
What is the minimum order quantity for SS 316 / 316L forgings?
We accept orders from as few as 10–25 pieces for development or project-specific requirements. Because stainless steel billet cost is high, MOQ for custom-tooled components is typically 25–50 pieces. We also accept single-piece orders for large nozzle or valve body forgings.
How do I get a quote for SS 316L forgings?
