Precision Forged Piston Rod Blanks
Piston rod reliability is the reliability of the hydraulic or pneumatic system. A piston rod must hold dimensional tolerance over millions of seal cycles, resist bending under transverse load, and never buckle under peak compressive force. Hot-forged piston rod blanks deliver the superior tensile strength, straightness and surface integrity that critical hydraulic applications demand.

Piston Rod Manufacturing Capabilities
Precision CNC Turning & Grinding
Piston rod blanks are CNC turned to near-final diameter, then cylindrically ground to dimensional tolerance of ±0.01 mm (f7 or h6) with surface finish Ra 0.4–0.8 μm for direct chrome plating and seal assembly.
Hard Chrome Plating
We apply hard chrome plating (20–100 μm thickness) to piston rod ground OD for corrosion resistance, surface hardness (900–1000 HV) and the seal-compatible surface finish required for standard hydraulic seals.
Quench & Temper Heat Treatment
EN24 and SAE 4340 piston rod forgings are quenched and tempered to 269–311 HB (tensile strength 900–1100 MPa) before machining, providing the core toughness needed to resist buckling and bending.
Induction Hardening of Journals
End journals and trunnion areas on piston rods are selectively induction hardened to 55–60 HRC for wear resistance at pin and clevis bearing contact zones.
Thread Rolling & End Machining
Piston rod end threads are roll-formed rather than cut, producing a thread with compressive residual stress and approximately 30% higher fatigue strength than cut threads — critical for rod end fatigue life.
Straightness Inspection
All piston rod blanks and finished rods are inspected for straightness using precision V-block and dial gauge measurement. Straightness tolerance is held to ≤0.1 mm per metre, essential for seal life and cylinder alignment.

Shivam Forge is a precision piston rod forging manufacturer at Shapar GIDC, Rajkot, Gujarat, producing hot-forged piston rod blanks and finished chrome-plated piston rods for hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic actuators, tie rods, hydraulic rams and actuator applications. We manufacture piston rods from 10 mm to 250 mm in diameter and up to 3 m in length in EN24, SAE 4340, SAE 4140 and EN8 steel grades, with in-house CNC turning, cylindrical grinding, hard chrome plating, heat treatment and thread rolling. Our ISO 9001:2015 quality system provides the material traceability and dimensional documentation that hydraulic cylinder OEMs require.
The geometry of a piston rod makes it uniquely demanding to manufacture. A rod that is 50 mm in diameter and 1500 mm long has a slenderness ratio of 30:1, meaning any deviation in straightness, eccentricity of the machined OD relative to the forging centreline, or surface defect that initiates a fatigue crack can result in sudden rod failure under compressive hydraulic load. Hot-forged piston rod blanks start with a superior base: no porosity, no segregation lines and a fine grain structure that responds consistently to quench and temper heat treatment. We then cylindrically grind the OD to ±0.01 mm with Ra 0.4 μm before chrome plating, and inspect straightness to ≤0.1 mm per metre on every finished rod.
Hard chrome plating is the standard surface treatment for hydraulic piston rods globally, and Shivam Forge applies hard chrome to a controlled thickness of 20–100 μm depending on cylinder application and operating environment. The chrome layer serves three functions: it provides the Ra 0.4–0.8 μm surface finish needed for hydraulic seal compatibility, it adds surface hardness (900–1000 HV) to resist the abrasive particles in hydraulic fluid and seal contact wear, and it provides corrosion resistance in the operating environment. For marine and offshore applications, we apply a duplex nickel-chrome coating for enhanced seawater corrosion resistance.
Our piston rod forgings and finished rods serve hydraulic press manufacturers, excavator and earthmoving equipment OEMs, agricultural implement manufacturers, industrial hydraulic cylinder builders, marine equipment suppliers and aerospace ground support equipment manufacturers. The Rajkot engineering and manufacturing ecosystem provides excellent supply chain depth for materials, coatings and logistics, enabling Shivam Forge to offer competitive pricing with Indian lead times. Gujarat's port infrastructure — Mundra and Kandla — means export shipments reach global destinations reliably within standard transit times.

Frequently Asked Questions
What diameter and length range can Shivam Forge produce for piston rods?
We produce piston rod forgings and finished rods from 10 mm to 250 mm diameter. Blank lengths up to 3 m are produced in-house, with longer lengths available through our supply chain.
What steel grades do you use for piston rod forgings?
EN24 and SAE 4340 for high-pressure and high-fatigue hydraulic cylinder rods; SAE 4140 for standard hydraulic and pneumatic service; EN8 (C45) for lower pressure agricultural and general industrial cylinder rods.
Do you apply hard chrome plating to piston rods?
Yes. We apply hard chrome plating (20–100 μm) to ground piston rod ODs. The chrome-plated surface achieves Ra 0.4–0.8 μm after superfinishing, which is compatible with standard hydraulic Wiper and U-seals.
What surface finish is needed for hydraulic seal compatibility?
Standard hydraulic seals require a piston rod OD surface finish of Ra 0.4–0.8 μm. Our grinding and chrome plating process consistently achieves Ra 0.4–0.6 μm, within the seal manufacturers' recommended range.
Why use forged piston rod blanks instead of machining from rolled bar?
Forged piston rod blanks have better mechanical properties than equivalent rolled bar, with reduced internal segregation. For high-pressure hydraulic cylinders and excavator applications, the improved fatigue properties of a forging justify the additional cost.
Do you use thread rolling for piston rod end threads?
Yes. We roll-form piston rod end threads to produce compressive residual stress in the thread roots, giving approximately 30% higher thread fatigue strength compared to cut threads — important for rod end fatigue life under cyclic loading.
Can you supply piston rods for excavator hydraulic cylinders?
Yes. We supply forged EN24 and SAE 4340 piston rod blanks and finished chrome-plated rods for excavator boom, arm and bucket cylinders, commonly in diameter ranges of 60–180 mm.
How do I get a piston rod forging or finished rod quotation?
Send your drawing specifying diameter, length, material grade, surface finish, chrome plating thickness and end machining details to sales@shivamforge.com or call +91 92657 72827. We respond within 24 hours.
