Why EN24 Is the Go-To Grade for Safety-Critical Forgings
EN24 delivers what pure carbon steel cannot: a nickel-chrome-molybdenum chemistry that gives 850–1000 MPa tensile strength in the T-condition, outstanding toughness, and uniform through-hardening on sections up to 100 mm. That combination is why design engineers specify it for gears, axle shafts, and high-tensile fasteners where fatigue failure is not an option. We maintain EN24 billet stock — sourced from SAIL, Tata Steel, or Mukand Special Steels — so you are not waiting for material procurement to start your order. Our in-house quench-and-temper furnaces and NABL-accredited lab partners ensure every batch meets the mechanical property targets on your drawing.
EN24 Steel Forging Applications
Gear Blanks & Finished Gears
EN24's hardenability makes it standard for spur, helical, and bevel gear blanks that need case or through hardening. We forge and rough-machine gear blanks to drawing, ready for hobbing.
Transmission Shafts & Axle Shafts
High torsional loads demand a steel that won't fatigue. EN24 forged shafts are specified across commercial vehicle transmissions, tractor PTOs, and heavy axle applications.
Stub Axles & King Pins
Steering geometry components carry combined bending and fatigue loads for the life of the vehicle. EN24T is the preferred grade for stub axles in LCVs, trailers, and agricultural equipment.
High-Tensile Bolts & Studs
Property class 10.9 and 12.9 fastener forgings in EN24 for engine head studs, wheel hub bolts, and critical structural joints where standard grade fasteners are insufficient.
Connecting Rods & Crank Pins
Reciprocating loads at high cycle count require superior fatigue resistance. EN24 is widely used for connecting rods in medium and heavy-duty engines and compressors.
Hydraulic Cylinder Barrels & Rods
Hydraulic rods in EN24T with chrome plating are standard in heavy construction and agricultural hydraulic cylinders requiring high yield strength and surface hardness after plating.
Our EN24 Forging Process
EN24 Billet Inspection (Chemical + PMI)
Every billet is verified by Positive Material Identification (PMI) and chemical check against the mill certificate before it enters the press shop. No surprises at inspection.
Controlled Heating (1150–1200°C)
EN24 is heated in calibrated gas-fired furnaces with pyrometer monitoring. Soaking time is controlled by section size to ensure uniform temperature through the billet cross-section.
Closed-Die Hot Forging
Impression-die forging on our 250T–1000T hammers and presses produces the directional grain flow that gives EN24 forgings their superior fatigue life compared to bar stock machining.
Quench & Temper to Drawing (T-Condition)
Our in-house oil-quench and temper furnaces bring EN24 to the T-condition — hardened and tempered to specified tensile and hardness ranges per your drawing or IS/BS standard.
CMM + Hardness Survey
Critical dimensions are verified on CMM. Hardness surveys at specified locations (surface, quarter-point, core) confirm uniform heat treatment penetration through the section.
Test Certificate (Tensile, Impact, Hardness per IS/EN)
3.1 material test certificates covering chemical composition, UTS, 0.2% proof stress, elongation, reduction of area, Charpy impact, and Brinell/Rockwell hardness — per IS 4432, BS 817M40, or EN 10083.
EN24 Specifications & Equivalents
IS 4432 Grade / BS 817M40
The Indian and British standard designations for this grade. IS 4432 governs alloy steel forgings in India; 817M40 is the BS designation most tooling drawings still reference.
USA Equivalent – AISI 4340 / AMS 6415
AISI 4340 is the American equivalent, specified under AMS 6415 for aerospace-grade applications. If your customer drawing says 4340, our EN24 billet meets the chemistry requirements.
European: 36CrNiMo4 (1.6511) / 40CrNiMoA
36CrNiMo4 to EN 10083-3 is the European equivalent. 40CrNiMoA is the Chinese GB equivalent. We can produce to any of these designations with the appropriate test report.
Typical T-Condition: 850–1000 MPa UTS
The T-condition (quench and temper to IS/BS specification) delivers 850–1000 MPa ultimate tensile strength with a 0.2% proof stress of 700–850 MPa depending on section size.
Impact Energy: ≥54 J (Charpy V, 20°C)
A minimum 54 J Charpy V-notch impact value at room temperature is the standard requirement. We routinely achieve 80–120 J on well-controlled heats, providing a significant safety margin.
Custom Hardness Bands on Request (28–36 HRC, 36–42 HRC)
Not every application wants maximum hardness. We can target specific HRC bands — 28–32 for machinability, 36–42 for wear resistance — with appropriate tempering temperatures and documented results.
EN24 — known as 817M40 in British standards and 4340 in the AISI system — sits at the top of the general-purpose alloy steel hierarchy for a simple reason: no other widely available grade delivers the same combination of tensile strength, toughness, and through-hardenability at a comparable price. Design engineers in India specify it for stub axles, gear blanks, king pins, and connecting rods because failures in those components are not tolerable. A cast or mild-steel alternative might save money in the workshop but will not meet the fatigue life demanded over 300,000 operating hours.
Billet sourcing is the first quality gate. We source EN24 from SAIL's Alloy Steels Plant Durgapur, Tata Steel's special steels division, and Mukand Special Steels — all with mill certificates and heat-traceable marking. Every heat is PMI-verified at goods inward before it enters the forge shop. If a billet's chemistry is marginal, it does not get forged. That discipline at intake eliminates material non-conformances downstream and protects your reputation with your own customer.
Our heat treatment capability covers the full EN24 cycle in-house. Austentising in calibrated gas-fired furnaces, oil quench in agitated tanks sized to prevent mass-induced hardness variation, then temper to your specified target. For sections above 75 mm diameter we run hardness surveys at surface, half-radius, and core to verify through-hardening. The resulting test certificate — format EN 10204 Type 3.1 — covers chemical, tensile, proof, elongation, reduction of area, Charpy impact, and Brinell hardness. NABL lab results are attached for any customer requiring third-party verification.
Typical delivery from our Shapar plant runs 15–25 working days for standard forged-and-heat-treated supply, or 25–35 days when machining is included. Urgent requirements with existing tooling can sometimes be expedited — call us to discuss. We ship across India and export to the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Export documentation including material traceability, packing list, and Certificate of Origin is handled from Rajkot.

Yes. Shivam Forge is an EN24 forging manufacturer based in Shapar, Rajkot, Gujarat. We carry EN24 billet stock and can produce forgings from prototype to bulk production with full Q&T heat treatment and test certificates.
What is the difference between IS 4432 and BS 817M40?
Both designations cover the same Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel chemistry. IS 4432 is the Indian Standard for alloy steel forgings, while BS 817M40 is the British Standard. The chemical composition and mechanical property requirements are essentially equivalent.
What does T-condition mean for EN24?
T-condition means hardened and tempered. The billet is austenitised, oil-quenched to martensite, then tempered at a controlled temperature to achieve the specified UTS and impact toughness combination — typically 850–1000 MPa for EN24.
What tensile strength can you achieve in EN24 forgings?
In standard T-condition we achieve 850–1000 MPa UTS. For larger sections where core properties are critical, we verify at quarter-point and core on the CMM coupon. Proof stress typically runs 700–860 MPa depending on section.
Do you offer CMM inspection for EN24 forged components?
Yes. CMM dimensional inspection is available for all machined EN24 forgings. We produce a dimensional report covering all critical features against drawing tolerances and include it with the shipment documentation.
