One-Stop Forging and Zinc Plating from Shapar, Rajkot

Outsourcing zinc plating adds lead time, handling damage risk, and another supplier to manage. Our in-house barrel and rack plating facility eliminates all three. We plate forged and machined components immediately after production, applying 8–25 micron zinc with trivalent chromate passivation (clear, yellow, or black) to ISO 4042 and IS 1573. Salt spray performance runs 72 hours minimum on clear, 96–120 hours on yellow passivate, and 120–240 hours with additional seal coat. Every batch gets salt-spray sampled and reported per ASTM B117. RoHS-compliant trivalent chromate is standard; we do not use hexavalent chromate.

Zinc Plating Applications at Shivam Forge

Automotive Fasteners (Bolts, Studs, Nuts)

Barrel-plated automotive fasteners with yellow or clear chromate are a core product from our plating plant. Standard is 8–12 micron zinc + yellow passivate to ISO 4042 Class 4 (96 hr salt spray minimum).

Forged Brackets & Clips

Pressed and forged brackets for automotive body-in-white, engine mounting, and exhaust systems. Rack plating ensures dimensional stability on precision locating holes and mating surfaces.

Tractor & Farm Equipment Hardware

Agricultural hardware — clevis pins, lynch pins, drawbar components, and linkage pins — zinc-plated for field corrosion resistance. Yellow passivate gives good visual inspection and corrosion protection in outdoor exposure.

Hydraulic Fittings & Connectors

Hydraulic adapters, banjo fittings, and connector bodies plated with clear or yellow chromate. Tight thread tolerances are maintained by controlling plating thickness within ±2 micron on critical features.

Industrial Shafts & Pins (8–12 Micron)

Short shafts, dowel pins, and cotter pins processed on barrel jigs or custom rack fixtures. 8–12 micron zinc with clear passivate provides cosmetic protection and corrosion resistance for indoor industrial use.

Structural Fasteners & Anchor Bolts

Heavy anchor bolts, foundation bolts, and structural fasteners barrel-plated with 12–25 micron zinc for construction and infrastructure projects where outdoor or embedded corrosion protection is required.

Our Zinc Plating Process & Capabilities

Pre-Treatment (Alkaline Degreasing + Acid Pickling)

Pre-treatment is where plating quality is won or lost. We run alkaline soak degreasing, electrolytic cleaning, acid pickling, and activation — in sequence, with tank chemistry monitored and logged daily.

Barrel Plating (Small Parts, Fasteners)

Tumble barrel plating handles fasteners, pins, and small forgings in batches to 200 kg. Excellent uniformity on complex geometries; suitable for all standard thread sizes up to M30.

Rack Plating (Large or Precision Parts)

Components requiring protection of specific surfaces, tight thickness control, or that cannot be tumbled without damage are rack-plated. Custom jigs and fixtures are made in-house for regular components.

Zinc Thickness: 5–25 Microns per Requirement

We plate to customer specification. Standard automotive is 8–12 micron; structural applications typically 12–25 micron. Thickness is verified by XRF fluorescence gauge at multiple points on each batch sample.

Chromate Passivation: Clear, Yellow, Black

Clear (blue-bright) trivalent chromate for assembly-critical parts where colour-coding is not required. Yellow trivalent for maximum corrosion resistance. Black chromate for aesthetic or electrical applications.

Salt-Spray Test Report (per ASTM B117 / IS 1573)

Batch samples are tested in our salt-spray chamber per ASTM B117. We issue a salt-spray test report showing hours to first base metal corrosion against the required minimum for each passivation type.

Zinc Plating Standards & Specifications

ISO 4042 – Electrolytic Zinc Coating on Fasteners

The primary international standard for zinc electroplating on threaded fasteners. ISO 4042 specifies coating class, thickness, and hydrogen embrittlement relief requirements for high-strength fasteners.

IS 1573 – Electroplated Coatings of Zinc

Indian Standard 1573 governs zinc electrodeposited coatings on iron and steel, specifying thickness classes from Fe/Zn 5 to Fe/Zn 25 with associated passivation and test requirements.

ASTM B633 – Zinc Electrodeposited Coatings

ASTM B633 is widely referenced for export components, especially those going to North American and Middle Eastern customers. We can produce to SC1 through SC4 service condition as required.

Trivalent Chromate (RoHS-Compliant)

We use only trivalent chromate (Cr3+) passivation — no hexavalent chromate (Cr6+). Our chemistry is RoHS-compliant and REACH-compliant, required for all components going into automotive or electronics supply chains.

Salt Spray: 96 Hours Minimum on Yellow Passivate

Yellow trivalent chromate passes 96 hours minimum in ASTM B117 neutral salt spray before white corrosion, and 120–144 hours to red rust in standard conditions. Documented by batch salt-spray report.

Custom Specs: 120H / 240H with Seal Coat

For customers needing extended corrosion protection, we apply topcoat sealers over the chromate — water-based or wax seal — extending salt spray performance to 240–480 hours without moving to hot-dip galvanising.

Zinc electroplating is the most cost-effective corrosion protection for steel fasteners and components operating in mild-to-moderate corrosive environments. A 12-micron zinc layer with yellow trivalent chromate passivation stops visible rust for 96+ hours in ASTM B117 salt spray — enough for most outdoor automotive, agricultural, and general engineering applications. The advantage of in-house plating at Shivam Forge is simple: your components move from the forge shop directly to the plating line without leaving the Shapar campus, eliminating transit damage, contamination risk, and additional lead time.

Our plating plant runs barrel and rack lines suited to the range of components we produce. Barrel plating handles fasteners, pins, and small forgings in batches up to 200 kg — the tumble action ensures good coating uniformity on complex thread profiles and recesses. Rack plating handles larger forged brackets, shafts, and precision components where you cannot afford contact marks or thickness variation on critical surfaces. We make custom jigs in-house for regular components, ensuring consistent rack positioning from batch to batch. Throughput across both lines is substantial enough to handle regular production programmes from our automotive and agricultural customers.

Passivation type selection matters more than most buyers realise. Clear trivalent chromate (blue-bright) is preferred for assembly-critical parts where visual inspection or torque-tension relationships must be repeatable — the thin clear film adds negligible dimensional variation. Yellow trivalent chromate provides superior corrosion performance (96 hr vs 72 hr to first white corrosion) with a distinctive golden colour useful for visual identification. Black chromate is used for aesthetic or EMI-shielding applications. All three are RoHS-compliant trivalent formulations — no hexavalent chromate in any of our bath chemistry.

Integration with forging and CNC machining is where our in-house plating capability creates real value. An automotive customer ordering stub axles — forged, normalised, CNC-turned, shot-blasted, and zinc-plated — gets a single part number, a single purchase order, a single delivery, and a single quality record. There is no coordination overhead between multiple suppliers, no mismatched paperwork, and no finger-pointing when something goes wrong. Our quality system tracks each batch from billet heat number through to plating salt-spray result, so traceability is end-to-end.

Yes. Shivam Forge has an in-house zinc electroplating plant at our Shapar, Rajkot facility. We plate forged and machined components on barrel and rack lines with clear, yellow, and black chromate passivation.

What standard do you plate to — ISO 4042 or IS 1573?

We plate to both. ISO 4042 for fastener applications, IS 1573 for general engineering components. ASTM B633 is also available for export or US-referenced drawings. Please specify your standard when ordering.

Is your chromate passivation RoHS-compliant?

Yes. We use trivalent chromate (Cr3+) exclusively. No hexavalent chromate (Cr6+) is used in our plant. All our passivation chemistries comply with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH.

How long does your zinc plating survive in salt spray testing?

Clear trivalent passivate: minimum 72 hours to white corrosion. Yellow trivalent passivate: minimum 96 hours to white, 120–144 hours to red rust. With topcoat sealer: up to 240–480 hours. We provide batch salt-spray test reports.

What is the difference between barrel and rack zinc plating?

Barrel plating tumbles small parts together in a rotating drum — efficient for fasteners and small components but not suitable for fragile or precision-surface parts. Rack plating fixtures components individually, giving better thickness control, no part-on-part contact, and suitability for larger or precision pieces.
