Spring Steel Forging Experience
Spring Steel Forgings Built for Fatigue Life, Not Just Hardness
Spring fatigue is not caused by incorrect hardness alone — it is caused by stress concentrations, surface defects and incorrect grain flow introduced during manufacture. Hot forging of spring steel in correctly controlled dies eliminates the surface seams, decarburisation and micro-cracks that plague rolled and cut spring blanks, giving forgings a measurably higher fatigue life. Shivam Forge has supplied spring steel forgings to commercial vehicle OEMs, tractor manufacturers and railway component suppliers across India for over 20 years.
Spring Steel Forging Products
Leaf Spring Blanks (Commercial Vehicle)
Forged leaf spring blanks for trucks, buses and trailers in SUP9 and 55Si2Mn spring steel. Eye ends, centre bolt holes and clip notches are forged near-net. Camber set to drawing specification after heat treatment. Weight range 2–80 kg per leaf.
Parabolic Leaf Spring Blanks
Tapered-section parabolic spring blanks for light commercial vehicles and modern truck suspensions. 60Si2Mn and SAE 9260 grades. Variable cross-section forged to maintain constant stress distribution — far superior to cut-taper blanks machined from flat bar.
Torsion Bar Forgings
Solid and hollow torsion bar forgings in EN45 and SAE 9260 for passenger car, SUV and light truck suspension systems. Splined or hexagonal end details forged near-net. Twist pre-set and shot peened after heat treatment for extended fatigue life.
Stabilizer Bar Blanks
Forged stabilizer bar blanks and end links in 65Mn and SAE 9260 for passenger car and commercial vehicle anti-roll bar assemblies. Correct grain flow through the bend radii — the highest-stress zone on any stabilizer bar — is the key advantage of the forged blank.
Disc Spring Blanks (Belleville Washers)
Precision-forged disc spring blanks in 60Si2Mn and EN45 for industrial clutch packs, valve springs and preload applications. Flatness tolerance held to ±0.1 mm before heat treatment. Finished to DIN 2093 Group 1, 2 and 3 dimensions.
Tractor & Agricultural Suspension Forgings
Leaf spring blanks and torsion spring forgings for tractor front axle and cab suspension systems. SUP9 and 55Si2Mn grades. Supplied as forged blanks or heat-treated to 420–450 HB ready for shot peening and assembly.
Spring Steel Manufacturing Process
Closed-Die Hot Forging at 1050–1150°C
Spring steel is forged in the narrow 1050–1150°C window where silicon-manganese grades have adequate ductility without grain coarsening. Tight temperature control prevents decarburisation of the surface layer — a primary cause of premature spring fatigue failure.
Oil Hardening & Tempering (420–480 HB)
Leaf spring and torsion bar forgings are austenitised at 860–900°C and oil quenched to achieve full martensite, then tempered at 400–450°C to reach 420–480 HB (equivalent to 1250–1500 MPa tensile strength). Temperature uniformity across the furnace batch is verified for every heat treatment run.
Shot Peening for Compressive Residual Stress
Shot peening (S230–S330 steel shot, Almen intensity 0.25–0.40A) introduces compressive residual stress at the spring surface to depths of 0.2–0.4 mm. This is the most effective single process improvement for spring fatigue life, closing incipient surface cracks before they can propagate.
Camber Setting & Pre-Setting
Leaf spring forgings are press-cambered to the free-camber dimension specified in the customer drawing after heat treatment. Torsion bars are pre-twisted beyond the elastic limit (scragging) to stabilise the working stress range and eliminate set-in-service.
Surface Decarburisation Control
Decarburisation depth is checked per batch by metallographic section — surface carbon must not fall below 0.45% at 0.1 mm depth per our process specification. Decarburised material is cause for rejection regardless of dimensional compliance.

Shivam Forge is a spring steel forging manufacturer at Shapar GIDC, Rajkot, Gujarat, producing hot-forged spring components for commercial vehicles, tractors, railway systems and industrial machinery. Our product range covers leaf spring blanks for trucks, trailers and buses in SUP9 and 55Si2Mn; parabolic spring blanks in 60Si2Mn and SAE 9260; torsion bar forgings in EN45 and SAE 9260; stabilizer bar blanks in 65Mn; and disc spring blanks in EN45 and 60Si2Mn. All grades are heat-treated in-house by oil hardening and tempering to 420–480 HB, with shot peening and camber setting available.
The fundamental advantage of hot-forged spring blanks over cut-from-bar alternatives is grain flow continuity. In a forged leaf spring blank, the metal flow follows the geometry of the part — through the eye ends, around the centre section taper, and out to the tip. This continuous grain flow means that the highest-stress locations on the spring (eye end transition radii, centre bolt boss) are also the locations with the most favourable grain orientation. Shot peening adds a further layer of protection by introducing compressive residual stress at the surface to depths of 0.2–0.4 mm, preventing surface crack initiation under cyclic load.
Decarburisation control is the detail that separates serious spring steel forging manufacturers from generic forging shops. Silicon-manganese spring steels (55Si2Mn, 60Si2Mn) are particularly prone to surface decarburisation at forging temperature because silicon reduces the carbon activity at the surface. At Shivam Forge, we control furnace atmosphere during heating and limit soak time at temperature. Every batch is checked by metallographic section — surface carbon must not fall below 0.45% at 0.1 mm depth. Decarburised material is rejected regardless of hardness test results.
For Indian commercial vehicle and tractor OEMs, spring steel forging sourcing from Rajkot offers real supply chain advantages. Our Shapar GIDC location is close to major CV assembly plants in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and within 120 km of Mundra port for export. Our spring steel blanks go through forging, heat treatment, shot peening and inspection under one roof, eliminating the subcontractor logistics that add lead time and create quality documentation gaps. Delivery for standard grades from stock is 4–6 weeks for production quantities, and 2–3 weeks for repeat orders with approved first articles.
