EN8 (080M40 / C45): India's Backbone Engineering Steel
EN8 accounts for roughly 60% of all general engineering forgings produced in India. Easy to machine, readily available in all billet sizes, and delivering 540–850 MPa tensile strength depending on heat treatment, it covers an enormous range of applications — from M16 bolt blanks and tractor hitch pins to 200 mm diameter coupling flanges and PTO shafts. Shivam Forge keeps permanent EN8 billet stock from 20 mm to 200 mm diameter, which means we can start forging your order the same week it's placed.
EN8 Steel Forging Applications
General Engineering Shafts & Spindles
Round shafts and stepped spindles from 20 mm to 200 mm diameter and up to 1500 mm length. Normalised for most applications; Q&T to 700–850 MPa for higher-load shaft duties. Used in conveyors, mixers, pumps, and general machinery.
Flanges & Couplings (BS / IS Standard)
Forged EN8 flanges for BS 4504 and IS 2825 pressure class applications — slip-on, weld-neck, and blind flanges from DN25 to DN200. Coupling halves for power transmission, normalized finish, machining allowance 3–5 mm on face and bore.
Agricultural Implement Shafts & Hitch Pins
Rotor shafts, tine holders, hitch pins, and draft links for rotavators, tillers, and ploughs. EN8 normalised is the standard specification for agricultural implement forgings per IS 7517. Fast delivery — we stock all common agricultural shaft sizes.
Fastener Blanks (Bolts M16–M48, Studs)
EN8 bolt and stud blanks from M16 to M48 diameter, forged from pre-cut billets. Grade 8.8 bolt properties achieved after Q&T. Hexagonal head and shank forged near-net to reduce thread-rolling setup. Volume orders accepted.
Tractor PTO Shafts & Implement Pins
PTO (power take-off) shaft blanks for 35–65 HP tractors. Splined end rough-forged, OD to within 2 mm of finish size. Implement pins — Category 1 and 2 (IS 4468) — forged and normalised. Bulk supply to tractor OEM tier suppliers.
Gear Blanks for Lower-Stress Applications
EN8 gear blanks for gearboxes operating below 500 MPa tooth root stress — road graders, sugar mills, textile machinery, and agricultural gearboxes. Where higher tooth strength is needed, we recommend EN24T or 42CrMo4 instead.

Test Certificate: Chemical + Mechanical (UTS, YS, Elongation, Hardness)
Every batch ships with a material test certificate covering: chemical analysis, UTS, 0.2% YS, elongation, reduction of area, and Brinell hardness. Certificate format follows EN 10204 Type 3.1. Third-party witnessed testing available.
EN8 / C45 Specifications & Equivalents
BS 970: 080M40 (EN8 Original Designation)
EN8 originates from BS 970 as grade 080M40 — medium-carbon steel with 0.36–0.44% C, 0.60–1.00% Mn. The EN prefix is the old Ruling Section system; 080M40 is the current BS 970 designation. Widely understood across UK and Commonwealth supply chains.
Indian Standard IS 1570 C45 (Nearest Equivalent)
IS 1570 Part 2 grade C45 is the Indian equivalent of EN8, with 0.40–0.50% C. Slight composition difference from 080M40 but mechanically equivalent in most applications. MTC to IS 1570 available for Indian government tenders and defence supply.
European: C45E (1.1191) / C45R per EN 10083-2
EN 10083-2 grade C45E (1.1191) is the European equivalent, with restricted sulphur (≤0.035%) for improved forgeability. C45R has restricted sulphur range for machinability. We issue EN 10204 3.1 certificates cross-referencing these grades on request.
USA: SAE 1040 / AISI 1045 (Nearest)
SAE 1040 (0.37–0.44% C) is nearest to EN8/080M40; AISI 1045 (0.43–0.50% C) is closer to IS 1570 C45. For US export orders, we supply mill certificates with ASTM A576 or equivalent labelling and cross-reference the composition.
Normalised UTS: 540–700 MPa (per Section Size)
Strength varies with section ruling size. Sections under 30 mm: UTS 620–700 MPa. Sections 30–100 mm: 580–660 MPa. Sections over 100 mm: 540–620 MPa. All within BS 970 Table 2 limits. Report states section size tested.
H&T (Q&T): 700–850 MPa – Hardness 201–255 HB
Quenched and tempered EN8 achieves UTS 700–850 MPa (ruling section ≤63 mm) with elongation ≥13% and hardness 201–255 HB per BS 970. Q&T condition used for shafts, pins, and couplings with dynamic load or wear requirement.
EN8 steel — designated 080M40 under BS 970 and C45 under IS 1570 — is the single most widely used forging material in India's general engineering industry. Its medium carbon content (0.36–0.44%) gives a reliable balance of strength, machinability, and cost that no special alloy steel can match on a per-kilogram basis. The grade covers applications from M16 bolt blanks and agricultural hitch pins at the lighter end, to 150 mm diameter coupling flanges and industrial spindles at the heavier end — all from the same billet stock. Shivam Forge maintains large EN8 billet inventory in diameters from 20 mm to 200 mm, sourced from SAIL and JSW with full mill certification.
Roughly 60% of Shivam Forge's output by tonnage is EN8 / C45 forgings. The volume advantage is real: because we consume EN8 billet in quantity every week, we can offer competitive pricing and short lead times that smaller producers or those running mixed-material operations cannot match. When a customer places an order for EN8 shafts or flanges, we typically have the right billet diameter in stock the same day and can begin forging within the week — rather than waiting 4–6 weeks for billet procurement.
EN8 in the normalised condition (830–860°C, air cool) is specified for the vast majority of general engineering forgings — flanges, agricultural shafts, coupling halves, and mild-duty spindles. Normalised properties: UTS 540–700 MPa (section-dependent), hardness 163–207 HB per BS 970. For applications requiring higher cyclic strength — transmission shafts, fastener blanks for grade 8.8, and rotating spindles — we supply EN8 in the quenched and tempered condition: UTS 700–850 MPa, hardness 201–255 HB. Both conditions are issued with full material test certificates.
EN8 is one of the easiest engineering steels to machine — chip formation is predictable, cutting speeds are high, and tool life is long in the normalised condition. This makes it cost-effective for semi-machined forgings where we perform CNC turning after forging to deliver a component within 0.2–0.5 mm of finish size. The customer then finishes on their own machine in a single setup. We regularly supply semi-finished EN8 flanges, coupling halves, and shaft blanks to engineering companies and OEM tier suppliers across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Shivam Forge ships EN8 forgings from Rajkot-Shapar across India within 3–5 days by road transport. Export of EN8 forgings to UAE, Southeast Asia, and East Africa is handled via Mundra Port, with transit of 8–14 days. Air freight for samples and urgent first-article batches dispatched within 48 hours of completion. Frequently Asked Questions
What is EN8 steel and what are its key properties?
EN8 (080M40 per BS 970, C45 per IS 1570) is a medium-carbon steel with 0.36–0.44% C. In the normalised condition it delivers UTS 540–700 MPa and hardness 163–207 HB. Quenched and tempered, UTS reaches 700–850 MPa. It machines easily, is widely available, and is cost-effective — making it the most commonly specified general engineering steel in India.
What is the difference between EN8 and EN24 steel for forgings?
EN8 is a plain medium-carbon steel (no significant alloying beyond Mn). EN24 (817M40) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with significantly better hardenability, higher UTS (850–1000 MPa in T condition), and superior toughness. EN24 costs 2–3× more. Choose EN8 for general engineering duty; choose EN24 where higher stress, impact loading, or large section depths require through-hardening.
Can you supply EN8 forgings to C45 or C45E specification?
Yes. We forge and certify to BS 970 080M40 (EN8), IS 1570 C45, DIN EN 10083-2 C45E (1.1191), and SAE 1040/1045. The material test certificate specifies the standard requested. If your drawing calls up C45E with restricted sulphur, we confirm the billet cert meets ≤0.035% S before forging.
Should I specify normalised or hardened & tempered EN8?
Normalised EN8 suits most static or lightly dynamic applications — flanges, brackets, coupling halves, and agricultural pins. Hardened and tempered (Q&T) is needed where the component sees cyclic stress, wear, or impact — shafts in transmissions, bolt blanks for grade 8.8, and spindles in rotating machinery. We can supply either; specify the condition on your drawing or purchase order.
Do you forge EN8 agricultural implement shafts?
Yes — this is one of our core product ranges. We supply rotor shafts, tine holders, draft links, and hitch pins for rotavators, cultivators, and ploughs. Most agricultural implement forgings are specified to IS 7517 with EN8 (C45) normalised. We hold billet stock and can despatch standard agricultural shaft forgings within 5–7 working days.
What material test certificate format do you issue for EN8 forgings?
Standard certificates follow EN 10204 Type 3.1 (certified by our quality manager against the test). The certificate covers chemical analysis (C, Mn, Si, S, P), UTS, 0.2% yield strength, elongation, reduction of area, and Brinell hardness. Third-party witnessed testing (Lloyd's, SGS, Bureau Veritas) available at additional cost.
What is the minimum order quantity for EN8 forgings?
We accept orders from 25 kg upwards for standard shapes. For custom-tooled closed-die EN8 forgings, minimum 50–100 pieces depending on component weight. Because we hold EN8 billet stock, even small development orders can ship within 2–3 weeks after tooling is ready.
How do I get a quote for EN8 steel forgings?
Email your drawing (PDF or DXF), quantity, specification (BS 970, IS 1570, or DIN EN 10083), heat treatment condition (normalised or Q&T), and any NDT requirements to sales@shivamforge.com. We return a quotation within 24 hours. Call +91-9265772827 for immediate assistance.
