The Backbone of Engineering Forgings — SAE 4140 / 42CrMo4

Few steels have earned the trust of as many industries as SAE 4140. The chrome and molybdenum additions give it deep hardenability, excellent fatigue resistance, and a UTS range of 655–1000 MPa depending on heat treatment condition — from annealed to fully Q&T. Our press shop handles 4140 forgings from sub-kilogram components to 150 kg open-die pieces. Flanges, shafts, valve bodies, drill collars, piston rods — whatever the geometry, the process is the same: controlled forging temperature, immediate post-forge treatment, and thorough mechanical testing before the component leaves the factory. Mill certificates from SAIL, Tata, or Mukand come standard with every consignment.

SAE 4140 / 42CrMo4 Forging Applications

Oil & Gas Drill Collars & Tool Joints

Drill collars require 4140 or 4145H with controlled hardness (HB 285–341) and 100% UT inspection to API 7-1. We produce drill collar forgings with the dimensional tolerances and test documentation the oil field demands.

Flanges & Pressure Vessel Nozzles (ASTM A182 F42)

ASTM A182 Grade F42 alloy steel flanges in weld-neck, slip-on, blind, and socket-weld configurations. We forge and rough-machine to ASME B16.5 facing and bore tolerances, supply with EN 10204 3.1 mill certs.

Hydraulic Shafts & Piston Rods

Hydraulic cylinder rods in 4140 Q&T are the industry default: high yield strength to resist buckling under side load, hard enough to support chrome plating, tough enough to take shock loads in construction equipment.

Automotive Transmission & Drive Shafts

4140 is specified for commercial vehicle prop shafts, PTO shafts, and input shafts where EN24 would be over-engineered but plain carbon steel lacks sufficient hardenability for induction hardening of journals.

Gearbox Components & Gear Blanks

Intermediate-duty gear blanks, ring gears, and pinion shafts in 4140 cover a wide range of agricultural, construction, and industrial gearboxes. We supply forged blanks to machining allowance or near-net shape.

General Engineering Shafts & Spindles

From pump shafts to lathe spindles, 4140 Q&T is the standard choice for engineers wanting predictable properties, good machinability after annealing, and a well-characterised heat treatment response.

Our 4140 Steel Forging Process

Billet Sourcing (SAIL / Tata / Mukand, Mill Cert Included)

We source 4140 / 42CrMo4 billets from named Indian special steel producers with heat-traceable mill certificates. Billet chemistry is verified by PMI at goods inward before going to the forge shop.

Controlled Forging Temperature (1150–1180°C)

4140 is forged at 1150–1180°C to prevent decarburisation and ensure good die fill. Temperature is monitored by calibrated pyrometers. Finish forging is completed above 950°C to avoid forging into the two-phase region.

Closed-Die or Open-Die per Weight

Components under 50 kg are typically closed-die forged for tight dimensional tolerance and good surface. Larger flanges, blanks, and shafts are produced by open-die forging. Tool room is in-house for both die types.

Quench & Temper to Specified Hardness (HB 280–320 or Per Drawing)

Oil quench from 845–870°C followed by temper at 540–650°C produces the standard HB 280–320 band. We can target other hardness bands as required and always verify hardness at multiple locations, not just surface.

CMM Dimensional Report

Machined 4140 forgings are inspected on CMM with a report covering all toleranced dimensions. For forged-only supply we provide profile and dimensional checks using calibrated manual gauging and profile templates.

Chemical + Mechanical Test Report (NABL Lab)

Standard supply includes an EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate. For API, ASTM, or export requirements, third-party NABL lab testing with independent chemical and mechanical reports is available on request.

4140 / 42CrMo4 Specifications

ASTM A182 Grade F42 (Flanges)

For pressure-rated alloy steel flanges, ASTM A182 F42 is the applicable specification. We produce weld-neck and blind flanges to this grade with full MT inspection and hydrostatic test certificates as required.

API 6A / API 5CT (Oil & Gas Components)

Oil & gas drill collar bodies, crossovers, and wellhead components produced to API 6A material and inspection requirements. 100% UT, hardness survey, and API-format traceability documentation provided.

DIN EN 10083-3: 42CrMo4+QT

European standard forgings to EN 10083-3 in 42CrMo4+QT condition. Min 900 MPa UTS, 750 MPa proof stress, 12% elongation for standard sections — or to specific customer drawing values.

BS EN 10250-3 (Open-Die Forgings)

Larger open-die forged bars, discs, and blocks produced to BS EN 10250-3, which governs open-die steel forgings for general engineering including sampling position and property requirements.

IS 4432 708M40 (Indian Standard Equivalent)

IS 4432 designation 708M40 is the Indian equivalent of SAE 4140 / 42CrMo4. We can produce against IS 4432 with NABL test reports when domestic Indian Standard documentation is required.

Custom Hardness / Condition on Request

Not every application needs full Q&T. We can supply normalised and tempered (N&T), annealed for machining, or to specific HB or HRC targets agreed at order placement with documented results.

SAE 4140 chromium-molybdenum steel is arguably the most important alloy steel in the engineering world. You find it in oil field equipment in the Middle East, hydraulic cylinders on construction sites across India, gear shafts in agricultural tractors, and pressure flanges in chemical plants on every continent. The reason is straightforward: 4140 offers a compelling combination of strength, hardenability, machinability, and cost that no other alloy steel has matched at scale. Our Shapar factory carries it in stock and can convert billet to finished forging faster than most buyers can arrange import delivery.

The oil & gas sector is among the most demanding customers for 4140 forgings. Drill collars, tool joints, and crossover subs operate in corrosive downhole environments under combined torsional, axial, and bending loads. API 7-1 specifies tight hardness bands and mandatory ultrasonic inspection for these components — requirements we meet with full API-format documentation. For surface wellhead and tree components under API 6A, our ASTM A182 F42 flange forgings come with 100% MT inspection, hydrostatic test capability, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates. We have exported to customers in the UAE, Oman, and Indonesia.

Automotive and hydraulic applications represent another major segment. Commercial vehicle transmission shafts, PTO shafts, prop shaft yokes, and hydraulic cylinder rods in 4140 Q&T are core products from our Shapar plant. The Q&T condition at HB 280–320 gives you a shaft with enough strength to handle the torque, a surface hard enough to support oil film lubrication, and machineability that keeps downstream tooling costs reasonable. If you need induction hardening of journals after machining, 4140 responds well to induction hardening to 55–58 HRC without the risk of cracking that higher-carbon grades bring.

Our billet sourcing discipline directly affects your product quality. We buy 4140 from SAIL's Durgapur plant, Tata Steel's special product range, and Mukand Special Steels — all with fully traceable heat-number certificates. No generic or unbranded billet enters the press shop. This matters when your customer requests traceability to the original steel maker's cast, as international buyers and oil field operators increasingly do. We hold the mill certs on file and can produce them at any time during the supply chain audit.
